WHERE TO STAY IN SICILY?

You’ll likely fly into bustling Palermo to the north or Catania to the East. Sicily is about the size of Massachusetts.  If you seek history, don’t miss Siracusa (full of Greek and Roman architecture), and Agrigento (the Valley of the Temples). If you prefer beaches, check out Trapani to the North West, (including San Vito lo Capo the Egadian islands), Cefalù and the Aeolian Islands. If you want to hike, there’s good options throughout Sicily but the most popular is Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano and the various hikes on the Aeolian Islands.

HOW TO GET TO SICILY?

Although there are trains from Rome and ferries from Naples, flying is the easiest way to get to Sicily. Palermo is the biggest airport, but you could consider flying out of Catania. Rental cars usually charge extra for returning to a different location.

HOW TO GET AROUND SICILY?

Renting a car is the easiest way to get around, but beware that Sicilians are known as some of the craziest drivers in Italy!  If you don’t want to rent a car, you could also rely on taxis.  Finally, there are trains and buses, but they are more unreliable than the rest of Italy, and you have to do your research and assume there will be delays.  If you want to rely on public transportation, ask potential accommodation options how easy it is to get to them by busy/train.
